According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, the NHL and NHLPA released a statement expressing their satisfaction with the recent Olympic test event. This trial run, a series of Italian Cup games, was a crucial step in assessing the arena's readiness for the upcoming Winter Games. Despite the challenges of a new ice surface and an unfinished venue, the statement indicated that the issues would be addressed promptly.
However, the test event itself was delayed due to construction setbacks, raising concerns about the arena's progress. The Santagiulia Arena, set to host most of the men's hockey tournament, including the medal rounds, was opened to the public for the first time during the test event. This is a significant departure from the typical timeline for Olympic test events, which usually take place well in advance of the Games.
During the games, a hole in the ice had to be repaired, but overall, the playing surface received positive feedback. IIHF President Luc Tardiff praised the ice quality, stating that the NHL's presence at the Olympics was all but guaranteed. He emphasized the importance of player safety and ice quality, regardless of the players' origins.

The NHL and NHLPA discovered a significant issue: the rink dimensions were three feet shorter than NHL regulations, contrary to the agreement with the IOC and IIHF. While they downplayed the impact on game quality and safety, this breach of agreement could spark debates about trust and accountability.
