Mastodon New Album 2026: Behind the Scenes of 'It Was a Hard Record To Make' (2026)

Mastodon's upcoming album, a testament to resilience and creativity, is set to be released this year, marking a significant milestone for the metal band. Singer-drummer Brann Dailor, in an exclusive interview, revealed the challenges and emotional journey behind the record, shedding light on the band's struggles and their triumph over adversity.

The album's creation was a tumultuous process, marked by personal tragedy and the loss of founding member Brent Hinds, who passed away in a motorcycle accident. Dailor, in a heartfelt statement, expressed the emotional toll of these events, emphasizing the impact on the band's creative process. He described the album as a reflection of the band's resilience, stating, 'It was a hard record to make. It was a very emotional time for us. I lost my mom; we went through all this turmoil with Brent, and then he passed away. It’s been tough. It’s all in the music, it’s all in the songs, and I’m excited to release it and get it out there into the world because we’ve been sitting on it for a while.'

Despite the challenges, Dailor assured fans that the album is an entirely new creation, with no contributions from Hinds. He explained that the band focused on new material, with Dailor taking the lead in the creative process. 'It’s all new stuff. Toward the end, unfortunately, it was hard to get him to come down to the [practice] space. He was interested in doing other stuff, which was fine. It was a confusing time. I was the one going, 'Come on, man. Come down. Let’s riff. He was a free spirit. He wanted to ride his motorcycle around and go do this and that. He was wherever the wind took him.'

The album's release comes as Mastodon prepares for a UK/European tour in early June, followed by a return to the US for the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Sick New World fest in Fort Worth, Texas. Dailor's enthusiasm for the album's release is palpable, as he looks forward to sharing the band's latest work with fans worldwide.

In a recent Instagram post, Dailor confirmed the album's release this year, addressing fan inquiries about the timeline. This announcement has generated excitement among fans, eager to hear the band's new music after a five-year hiatus. Mastodon's ability to create music amidst personal and band-related turmoil showcases their artistic resilience and commitment to their craft, making their upcoming album a highly anticipated event in the metal music scene.
