In a bold move that has captured the attention of football fans, the New York Jets have appointed former head coach Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator. This decision, made public on Wednesday, comes after the Jets decided to part ways with Tanner Engstrand, who had a challenging season that saw the team rank a disappointing 29th in both offensive yards and points per game.
Reich steps into this role amid significant uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position and a pressing need for additional offensive talent to support standout players like Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, who is set to become a free agent soon.
The choice of Reich was not made lightly; he was one of three finalists for the position and had a second interview with Aaron Glenn just a day prior. The Jets also considered other candidates, including Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell, during their selection process.
"Frank brings a unique blend of experience, creativity, and composure under pressure," Glenn explained. "Having experienced the game from multiple perspectives—as a player and as a coach who has successfully overseen high-caliber offenses—he possesses a rare ability to analyze the current state of the game and adjust strategies accordingly. His deep understanding of offensive dynamics and player strengths will be instrumental in leading our team to success."
Initially, the Jets had hoped to retain Engstrand while revoking his play-calling duties, but Engstrand opted to leave for a position with the Falcons instead.
At 64 years old, Reich boasts an impressive resume that includes two stints as an NFL head coach with the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers. He currently serves as a senior adviser at Stanford University, where he briefly acted as interim head coach in 2025.
During his five-year tenure with the Colts from 2018 to 2022, Reich recorded a regular season record of 40 wins against 33 losses and led the team to the playoffs twice. However, his time with the Panthers was less successful, culminating in his dismissal midway through the season.
Earlier in his career, Reich made a name for himself as the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played a pivotal role in their Super Bowl victory in 2018. He also held the offensive coordinator position with the San Diego Chargers from 2014 to 2015.
Alongside Reich, the Jets conducted virtual interviews with other candidates, including Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells, but ultimately chose him due to his extensive background and proven track record.
Interestingly, Frank Reich has a connection to the Jets as he played 10 games for them back in 1996, a season that was notably challenging for the franchise, finishing with just one win and fifteen losses. Remarkably, he shared the field that year with Glenn, who was his teammate at the time.
