Flu Alert: Avoid Visiting Northamptonshire Hospitals to Protect Patients (2026)

A Health Alert: Flu Season and Hospital Visits

In a bid to safeguard patients, especially the elderly and vulnerable, the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) has issued a critical message to the public. With a rise in flu cases, the hospital is urging visitors to refrain from visiting patients if they exhibit flu-like symptoms or have been unwell within the last 48 hours.

This proactive measure comes as a response to the alarming 15 flu-positive inpatient cases at Kettering General Hospital and 14 at Northampton General Hospital. UHN emphasizes that while their emergency departments remain accessible for life-threatening conditions, flu is not typically a concern.

Holly Slyne, UHN's associate director of infection prevention and control, highlights the importance of this request, stating, "We are witnessing the impact of flu across the country, and our priority is to protect our patients, many of whom are elderly and more susceptible to viral illnesses."

Slyne encourages the public to take a proactive approach by treating viral illnesses like flu, COVID, and common colds at home, with the support of pharmacists and over-the-counter medicines. She advises, "If you are unwell with flu-like symptoms, it's best to stay away from hospitals and visit relatives or friends only if absolutely necessary."

For those at higher risk, including individuals aged 65 and above, pregnant women, and those with specific long-term health conditions, the NHS offers a free flu jab. UHN strongly encourages eligible individuals to take advantage of this preventive measure.

Symptoms of flu include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headache, fatigue, and vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children). If you experience these symptoms, it's recommended to rest, stay warm, take pain relievers, drink plenty of fluids, and seek medical advice from NHS 111 or your GP if symptoms worsen.
