LIVIGNO, Italy (AP) - The Czech Republic fans, clad in their red-white-and-blue, banged their cowbells in anticipation of a victory they believed was inevitable. But as they checked their programs, their star speed racer, Ester Ledecka, had already been eliminated from the competition, leaving her as a mere spectator.
The gold medal in snowboarding's parallel giant slalom went to Zuzana Maderova, a 22-year-old Czech racer with no prior big-time wins to her name, who was eight years younger than Ledecka.
"I can't believe it now," Maderova exclaimed, "but I'm an Olympic champion."
This unexpected outcome came just hours after Lindsey Vonn's crash in an Alpine downhill event in Cortina D'Ampezzo, a stark reminder that nothing is guaranteed in Winter Olympic racing.
Ledecka, who had been on a remarkable winning streak, losing no PGS races in nearly two years and missing no podium finishes in five, made a critical mistake in the quarterfinals, losing precious time and her chance at another title.
"I made a sudden mistake in the quarterfinals," she said, "I did my best, but this is the nature of the sport."
Her country's president, Petr Pavel, had come to Livigno expecting a victory, but Ledecka's early exit left him and the fans disappointed.
Maderova's victory, on the other hand, was a triumph for the sport, as she outpaced Ledecka by 0.83 seconds in the final.
Despite the loss, Ledecka remains a force to be reckoned with, with her coach, Justin Reiter, acknowledging her potential. "She has so much more in the tank," he said, "She can ride so much faster. But she didn’t gear up. She geared down."
The day's events also saw Austrian Benjamin Karl repeat as champion, an all-Italian race for third place in the women's bracket, and a photo finish in the men's third-place race, all contributing to an unpredictable day at the snow park.
Ledecka's future in the sport is now uncertain, as the Olympic future of snowboarding racing hangs in the balance. She expressed her frustration, stating, "I don’t think anyone will give a (expletive) about what the athletes think."
