Bold claim about cannabis compounds could change how we think about ovarian cancer treatment. And this is where it gets controversial... CBD and THC, components of cannabis, are being explored as potential allies against ovarian cancer in new lab studies. Researchers from Khon Kaen University in Thailand tested cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on ovarian cancer cells and found notable anti-cancer activity, with the hope of someday turning these findings into new therapies for a notoriously difficult-to-treat disease.
The study focused on CBD, which does not cause a high, and THC, the ingredient responsible for cannabis’s psychoactive effects. Previous work hinting at anti-cancer properties for these compounds spurred scientists to investigate whether they might work against ovarian cancer specifically. Dr. Siyao Tong, the study’s lead, notes that ovarian cancer remains one of the deadliest gynecologic cancers due to late detection, high recurrence, and limited effective treatments. The team aims to discover safer, more effective drugs that could improve outcomes and reduce toxicity for patients facing this challenging disease.
Ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. While treatments have improved, many patients do not respond well to existing drugs and endure significant side effects. This drives ongoing research into safer, more potent options.
To assess potential benefits, scientists used two ovarian cancer cell lines: one sensitive to platinum-based chemotherapy and one resistant, mirroring the variability seen among patients. They exposed these cells to CBD, THC, or a CBD+THC combination, and also included healthy cells to gauge potential harm to non-cancerous tissue.
Combining CBD and THC yielded the strongest results. Both compounds reduced the cancer cells’ ability to form colonies, indicating diminished survival and replication, with the 1:1 CBD:THC ratio delivering the most pronounced effects. This suggests that the two compounds may act through different biological pathways that reinforce each other when used together. Although each compound alone had some impact, the combination proved superior in stopping growth.
Beyond shrinking the cancer cell colonies, the study showed that CBD and THC also impede cancer cell migration, hinting at a possible role in limiting metastasis, a major cause of ovarian cancer deaths. Importantly, healthy cells were largely unaffected, implying that CBD- and THC-based therapies could be less toxic than many current treatments. Nevertheless, these experiments were conducted in vitro (in the lab), so results must be interpreted with caution since tumours in living organisms are far more complex.
The researchers also explored how these cannabinoids affect cell signaling. They found indications that CBD and THC help normalize the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, a signaling cascade frequently overactive in ovarian cancer and linked to tumor growth and therapy resistance.
Despite these encouraging signs, much more research is required before any clinical application. The work provides an important foundation for future studies on CBD and THC in ovarian cancer and invites broader discussion about whether cannabinoids could complement existing therapies or offer new directions for treatment.
