An 18-year-old sensation, Blades Brown, almost made history on Friday, coming agonizingly close to a record-breaking 59.
In a chaotic week, Brown, fresh out of high school and already a pro, found himself tied for the lead at The American Express. With just three holes to go, he needed one more birdie on the Nicklaus Tournament course, a breeze in perfect weather conditions.
His gap wedge on the final hole, the par-4 ninth, was perfect, but his 6-foot birdie putt just grazed the edge, leaving the gallery groaning in disappointment. Despite this, Brown remained upbeat, eager for a well-deserved nap.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Brown's journey to this point is nothing short of remarkable. He earned Korn Ferry Tour status last year and, after a tournament in the Bahamas that ended just the night before, he flew privately to Palm Springs, arriving mere hours before The American Express. And now, he finds himself tied with the sport's top player, Scottie Scheffler.
Scheffler, who started on the easier courses, maintained a bogey-free round, despite not quite matching his opening performance. He birdied the last three holes of his round, putting himself in a strong position for the weekend.
The typically relaxed tournament in the Coachella Valley was a sellout on Friday, with Scheffler drawing a large crowd and a young talent on the rise. Brown's performance, with six birdies and an eagle in his first seven holes, had everyone talking.
And this is the part most people miss...
Brown wasn't the only one with a chance at breaking 60. Andrew Putnam, on the 18th hole at La Quinta, also needed a birdie to reach that milestone. Both players made par, leaving the tournament wide open for the weekend.
Scheffler, the seasoned pro, acknowledged Brown's impressive form, noting the lack of 'scar tissue' that comes with youth.
So, what does this mean for the weekend? Will Brown's youthful energy and talent challenge Scheffler's experience?
